about
Known for songs about life more than love, Punch The Sun once again places a magnifying glass over a common yet oft-unexamined human activity: the genesis of friendship. In “Character,” self-doubt is translated into tension-building augmented chords, occasionally unsettling melodic intervals, and a brooding cello underscore, sensuously provided by New Morse Code’s Hannah Collins. The tune recalls Fiona Apple in its pleasantly off-kilter vibe, building to the punchline: “Oh, see, I like to pretend but when I try to fake ‘em out, I fall out of character.”
lyrics
If I come early
Will you be
Expecting me
To?
If I am worried
Will you be
Assured?
Oh, see, I want to be friends
But I don't wanna make 'em
Oh, see, I like to pretend,
But when I try to fake 'em out
I fall out of character
I fall out of character
If I am colder
Than you were
Expecting me
To
If I'm alone
Would you leave me
Askew
Oh, see, I want to be friends
But I don't wanna make 'em
Oh, see, I like to pretend,
But when I try to fake 'em out
I run out of character
I run out of character
Just in the case it offends
I'll offend towards my own comprehension
I'll make amends to the point of contention
Just for the sake of a word
I'll stay wordless and leave it absurd
It's all for the better, I'm better, it's better
This way
Oh, see, I want to be friends
But I don't wanna make 'em
Oh, see, I like to pretend,
But when I try to fake 'em out
I fall out of character
I fall out of character

PTS is equal parts noise and sensitivity, with introspective lyrics and irreverent shout choruses, revelling in dancy anti-man-splaining anthems, dreamy thunderstorm ballads, and yellin’ about guys named Steve.
